The new iPad summary

So Apple just announced "the new iPad" (yes that is it's official name) and there is only one thing I am excited about.
The new screen, which is a 9.7" IPS panel with a resolution of 2048x1536 (4:3) which gives it a pixel density of 264.

Anyway, here is a very quick summary which cuts out all the crap and just go straight to the new stuff.

New iPad specs

  • 9.7" IPS screen with a resolution of 2048x1536 (4:3) and "44% better color saturation than before".
  • "Quad-core graphics" - The word "graphics" leads me to believe that it's just the GPU which has four cores. Don't quote me on this, but I assume the New iPad has a dual core Cortex A9 CPU just like the old iPad 2 has, but with a more powerful GPU to drive the new screen properly. Probably the SGX 543MP4, which is the same one used in the iPad 2, but with 4 cores instead of 2. The PSP Vita use the same one.
  • *Maybe* 1GB of RAM instead of 512MB. Not confirmed yet.
  • iSight camera - 5 megapixel camera on the back. Probably the same as the iPhone 4S has.
  • The new SoC (called the A5X) has ISP support built into the SoC which supports LTE and also HSPA on networks which does not support LTE. Verizon, Rogers, Bell, Telus and AT&T will be LTE partners.
  • Voice dictation (speech to text)
  • Weight - 1.4lbs (0.64KG), old iPad 2 was slightly lighter at 1.33lbs (0.6KG)
  • Thickness - 9.4mm, old iPad 2 was slightly thinner at 8.8mm.
  • Wifi prices - $499 for 16GB - $599 for 32GB - $699 for 64GB.
  • LTE prices - $629 for 16GB - $729 for 32GB - $829 for 64GB.
  • Launch date is the 16th March.
On a side-note. Apple is calling this 264PPI display "retina". However, a human eye can see about 475 pixels per inch, if you focus and put your eye really close. This means that in order for the iPad to have a real "retina display", it would have to have a resolution of 3688x2766 on the 9.7" display.

That's pretty much it. Kind of nice and logical upgrade, but the iPad will still be nothing more than an expensive and shiny toy in my eyes.
