Google Images no longer allows you to turn safe search off

Google Images in the US (aka, only the .com version) no longer allows users to turn the safe search off.  This will most likely be implemented on the other Google sites soon.
Might not seem like a big deal, but the thing is that even with"Filter explicit results" turned off, you will still only get the same results as the old "Moderate" filtering. Basically it now looks like this:
Old Strict filtering = New filtering with "Filter explicit results" turned on.
Old Moderate filtering = New filtering with "Filter explicit results" turned off.
Old filtering off = No longer exists.

You can get porn and other content like that if you use a very porn related term, but if you use some of the more vague (for example most fetishes) for image searching then you won't get any nudes.

Why did they do this? I honestly have no idea. I can't think of a single reason why they would do this. Basically what they did was remove the option to turn filtering off.

Here is a very Not Safe For Work image if you want to see a comparison. I censored some of the images because they were too lewd.
Here is a link to the comparison on imgur

The Nexus 4

Google and LG has worked together and released a new Nexus phone running the latest version of Android. It's not just any version of Android though, it's the pure "vanilla" version of Android, which was developed by Google themselves (no bloat) which also means you'll get very fast updates. Not only does it have fantastic specs, it's also very cheap.
Here are the fantastic specs:

Microsoft Surface RT pricing is out! 499 USD

Seems like someone at Microsoft messed up and released the price for the RT a bit too early.
499 USD for the 32GB model without the touch cover.
599 USD for the 32GB model with the touch cover.
699 USD for the 64GB model with the touch cover.

At that price I think Microsoft will have a tough time selling that many Surface RTs, and I would not call these prices "competitive". It costs as much as the iPad, which in my opinion has a pretty big Apple tax (does have a really nice screen though). It is worth noting that you only get the 16GB iPad model for 499 though. So you could say the Surface is 100 dollars cheaper than the iPad when you compare them with the same capacity.

Anyway, at that price I think the Pro model is much more attractive, which should cost about 900 dollars for the 64GB model in order to be "competitive" vs Ultrabooks. The Pro model will have a far better screen, much more powerful processor and GPU, a very nice stylus with palm blocking, and a few other nice things over the RT model.

New Galaxy S 3 commercial

Oh Samsung, how I love your marketing department.
This (as well as making awesome products) is why I love you Samsung.

The Next Big Thing is Already Here -- Samsung Galaxy S III

And for those of you who missed their previous commercial, here is the Galaxy S 2 vs iPhone 4S one.

The Next Big Thing -- Galaxy S II

What I really like is how Apple fanboys will be really bad because it hits a bit too close to home for them.
Oh and before you go "baww they are just ripping on the competition because they are bad themselves", you might want to think twice before throwing rocks in a glass house.
The MacFags on Reddit is already in full fanboy mode.

Things you should not do when arguing

Here is a list of common fallacies or ways of arguing which you should NOT use in a serious argument. They make you look stupid and the other party will have a hard time taking you seriously.
This is far from a complete list but I've picked out a few I often see people use (in no particular order).

Tim Cook tells lies onstage, and people mindlessly believes him.

One think I noticed during the iPhone 5 keynotes was that Tim said the new iPhone 5 is, and I quote "the world's thinnest smartphone". How thin is it? it's 7.6mm thin, which is 18% thinner than the 4S.
So the thinnest smartphone in the world (the iPhone 5 according to Tim) is 7.6mm thin?
I find this rather strange since there is a very well known Android powered phone which is 7.1mm thin (there are also 2 different version of the Razr which is thinner than the iPhone 5)... There is also this less known Android powered phone which is 6.65mm thin... And then there is this 6.7mm thin Android powered phone.

I guess "worlds fifth thinnest smartphone" didn't sound quite as good.

About the Windows 7 guide

So I just got an email regarding my very popular post "How to pirate Windows 7 the correct way" and Google has decided to take it down.
I still got the guide saved, but I am a bit too busy right now to do anything (school just started and all that). I might be able to get it up again later since I do not believe I am doing anything wrong. I am not hosting anything illegal, not breaking any copyrights etc. Just linking to sites where you can download things which might be used for illegal things, which Google does all the time themselves. I will look into it when I can.

Samsung did not copy Apple

I think I am going to write a more detailed post about this later, but I want to post at least something  for now (it's been ages since the last post and I blame all the good anime I've been watching).
Charles Verhoeven is my new hero. For those of you who do not know that is, he is Samsung's attorney in the current Samsung vs Apple trial. He uses logic and reason against Apple and ain't afraid of nothing.
Here is one of the pictures he showed the jury.
Still think Samsung copied Apple?

Piracy is not theft, and not really bad either

I've seen quite a bit of "piracy is terrible, you're stealing and breaking the law" videos/posts as of late. Since I don't have anything better to do while banned from /g/ I thought I'd give my 2 cent on piracy.

Windows 8 to be released October 26, 2012

Windows 8 will be generally available the 26th October 2012. Upgrading from XP, Vista or 7 will cost $40 which is really nice compared to the older prices (109 USD for a retail copy of Windows 7 Home premium upgrade).
They have not said anything about the price of OEM and non-upgrade versions yet.

Yet another stupid Apple patent...

Why do the patent office keep approving Apple's patents? Why?
This new patent is about how documents, lists and lots of other things are displayed on a touch based device.

Needless to say, I wouldn't be surprised if some other device like Windows Mobile or Symbian did these things before Apple did.

You can read more about it on PatentlyApple or FreePatentsOnline.

Let's post (most likely) illegal activities on our FaceBook walls!

I shouldn't even have to point out why this is a terrible idea. It's probably best to stick with an old version of µTorrent or move over to some other client.

iPhone and OS X vurnable to malware, just like any other computer system in the world

New malware for the iPhone, as well as OS X have been discovered by Kaspersky.

The one for OS X spreads via an email. The email has a ZIP file attached to it. If you unrar it then you'll see a JPG, but the archive also includes a malicious program which installs itself automatically and basically gives the creator of it access to the computer. The creator can transfer files, run commands on the computer and other things.
Read more here: Kaspersky

The iOS one is a bit of a surprise since this is, as far as I am aware, the only time a real malicious piece of software have made it to the app store. There have been instances of programs getting through before and doing things Apple don't want, such as Handy Light which used to let you tether your phone. Anyway, this app called "Find and Call" is also in the Android Market. What it does is uploads all your contact info in the address book to the creators server, and also spams your contacts with SMSes with a link to the program.
Read more here: Blog post made by someone working at Kaspersky

So remember, you're never 100% safe no matter what OS you use.

Microsoft Surface

Windows 8 on my laptop

I got my laptop back (had to send it in to school to get all school owned programs wiped from it) so I replaced the 2.5" HDD with my Corsair Force F60 SSD and installed Windows 8 Release Preview on it. I must say, Windows 8 on a laptop like this, is fantastic. There seems to be a bug where I got like 50% chance of getting a blue screen when I start from sleep mode, but other than that it's great.
Very smooth even with mediocre specs (core 2 duo and 4GB of RAM, integrated graphics) and it really feels like the limited resolution gets used efficiently with the new GUI. Booting takes about 20 seconds, and more than half of that time seems to be the BIOS loading. Yeah, starting the BIOS takes longer than fully booting the whole OS.

The new "Retina" Macbook Pro

The only interesting thing announced at Apple's WWDC was the new Retina Macbook Pro. They also announced iOS 6, some things for OS X Lion and other stuff, but to me, the biggest thing by far was the Macbook Pro.

Apple now owns yet another ridiculous patent

You guys have seen those trendy ultrabooks, right? Very light weight and thin laptops with somewhat decent processors, an SSD and usually pretty nice screens.
Well, most of them uses a triangular shape, where the front (where the touch pad is located) is quite a bit thinner than the back, where the battery is located. They look kind of like this:

Asus tablets I am actually excited about

As some of you probably know, I am not a fan of those tablets like the iPad and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. However, I have seen at least 2 tablets announced at Computex this year. Both of which are from Asus. The one which I am most excited about is this one:

Lots of passwords stolen

Seems like a lot of sites have had security breaches recently.
I assume lots of you have already heard of LinkedIns' users passwords being stolen, about 6.5 million of them in fact. However, it seems like the same people have stolen about 1.5 million passwords from the site eHarmony. It doesn't end there though, because passwords have leaked from Last.fm as well.
Seems like Reddit might be involved as well, but nothing is confirmed yet.
So if you use any of these sites, update your passwords and preferably use different passwords for each site.

Apple seek ban on the Galaxy S 3

This is not even funny anymore... For **** sake Apple, what the hell are you doing?
So apparently Apple is trying to get the Galaxy S 3 banned, because S Voice is too much like Siri. I wonder if Apple realize Almost all icons, the background and the functionality of S voice was already in the Galaxy S 2, which was released long before the iPhone 4S were. If anything, it's Apple who is copying Samsung.
I hate Apple so much right now... They are not even trying to compete anymore, just ban everyone else who is a threat seems to be Apple's strategy. Maybe because pretty much all their own products sucks?

High five Asus!

Some people are accusing Asus for being "sexists" because they made a funny comment on one of their models. Some (stupid) people see this as being sexists, which is in my opinion just wrong for a few reasons. Here is the awesome tweet:

Update your Windows machine fast!

It seems like the malware called "Flame" has managed to obtain a certificate which looks like it is a genuine one from Microsoft. What happens is that the malware will try to do a man-in-the-middle attack. It will trick Windows into thinking it is receiving a legit update from Microsoft, and install it. A patch is already out which removes the certificate from the list of trusted ones in Windows. The update is called "KB2718704" and everyone should install it eminently. It is available through the Windows Update and Microsoft's website. Please only install this update before installing any other update.

There is no need to panic, but you should update as fast as possible because this is a pretty big security hole.
From F-Secure's article:
>I guess the good news is that this wasn't done by cyber criminals interested in financial benefit. They could have infected millions of computers. Instead, this technique has been used in targeted attacks, most likely launched by a Western intelligence agency.

Fuck yeah Loreen!

I usually don't give a crap about The Eurovision Song Contest, but I knew we (Sweden) had a good chance of actually winning this year so I decided to watch it, and I am glad I did. Sweden came first with 372 points. Russia came in second place with a total of 259. 113 less than glorious Sweden.

Facebook IPO

So as some of you people already know. Facebook held an IPO a few days ago (18/05 to be exact) and a lot of people hadn't even heard of IPO before this (me included, which is not that interested in stocks). So what is an IPO? IPO stands for "Initial public offering", which is often called "stock market launch". As the name suggests, it is when a company starts selling stocks to the public. Here is a quick summary of what happened and the state of the stocks as of the time writing this.

Ivy Bridge's high temps mystery now solved

Remember how Ivy Bridge became quite a bit hotter than Sandy Bridge? I thought this was very strange since Intel's new transistors should in theory have had much better efficiency and heat output. Well, a while ago someone on Overclockers.com's forums posted an image of an Ivy Bridge processor without the IHS (integrated heatspreader) and found out that Intel is not using their normal "fluxless die-to-heat spreader" setup, but are using regular thermal paste.
How big is the difference between regular paste and the fluxless soldering method? Overclockers.com says the thermal paste is roughly 1/16 as efficient at transferring heat from the actual CPU to the IHS.

Stallman just collapsed

Yes Stallman apparently collapsed on stage during a speech in Barcelona. He felt ill but not badly enough to actually take the situation that seriously, because he joked about how the health care budget cuts are made to kill people (it took the ambulance 20 minutes to get to him).

Anyway, he managed to leave the building without help so he is most likely fine now. However, the conference was canceled.

Edit: He is currently at the hospital but he is OK. He did not have a heart attack or something like that. Any significant info will be posted on FSF's website.

Apple puts your password in plain text

The disk encryption software in OS X called FileVault recently got updated. However, the update writes a log file which contains lots of uninteresting things, but also the users password in plain text. The logfile itself is not encrypted so if someone were to double click it, they would see your password.
This has apparently been known for three months. All users who has logged in since Lion was updated to 10.7.3 has their passwords stored in this unencrypted file.
FileVault 2 is apparently unaffected, but this is a pretty serious mistake from Apple.

The Galaxy S 3 finally announced

Yes it is finally announced. The live stream just ended (I was lazy and didn't write the rest of the article for almost a day) and I am very pleased with the Galaxy S 3. There are loads of new stuff but only a few things which are (in my opinion) worth mentioning. It seems like Samsung put a lot of focus on software and "innovative" features this time around instead of just throwing more powerful hardware at the phone. So what is the new Galaxy S 3 like?

Response to MG Siegler on TechCrunch

I was looking at my RSS feeds today and noticed an article entitled "Android Is Either "Winning" Because Apple Is Letting It, Or Losing" and I thought it sounded interesting so I decided to check it out. I was not surprised when the whole article was filled with fallacious arguments, biased ways of looking at things and other misleading things. Well I got nothing better to do so I might as well respond to it.

Ivy Bridge summary

Well it is finally here. Intel's new processors codenamed Ivy Bridge are finally released (retailers will get them around the 29:th). As most of you probably know, Intel release CPUs which are either a "tick" or a "tock". The tocks are new architectures such as Sandy Bridge were, and the ticks are die shrinks and minor tweaks. Ivy Bridge is a tick+, which according to Intel means that it's a tock but with major improvements to the GPU part. Anyway, here is the summary...

Galaxy S 3 teaser is now out.

Well it seems like the mysterious website was just a teaser after all. The page brought you to an anagram which when "decoded" says www.TheNextGalaxy.com, which is currently down due to the massive traffic.
If you want to see the teaser then just check out the youtube video.

You can see a blue and a white thing near the end which to me looks like some kind of ceramic. Maybe the material of the case, and it will be available in blue or white? Just 11 more days until we find out...

Galaxy S 3 in less than 20 hours?

As most of you probably know, I watch quite a bit of anime. Most of them are already very famous and a lot of people have probably already heard of them. Anyway...

Yet another Trojan for OS X on the loose.

Thought I'd just make a quick update about this. Yet another malware for OS X has been discovered and it also uses a Java vulnerability like the other malware did. This malware is not as widespread as the one I posted about earlier though.
It seems like you're safe if you have installed the Java update from Apple. Anyway, the moral of the story is, OS X is not as safe as you think. OS X is not immune to it and this has been proven countless of times. Oh and like with the other malware I posted earlier, this one does not require any user interaction. It just downloads and installs itself.

Ivy Bridge motherboards and release date

Motherboards with the z77 chipset are now available at retailers. I am quite disappointed to be honest. The only difference (when comparing the chipsets) between z67 and z77 is that z77 natively supports USB 3.0 as well as PCIe 3.0.
Motherboard manufacturers such as Asus have obviously added some extra features themselves to their z77 boards but they could have added them to the z68 boards... Oh well, the new motherboards looks good, but I am not sure the higher prices are really worth it.

Ivy Bridge desktop processors will be released the 29:th this month.

Apple will today (19th) be hosting a conference in order to discuss what they will do with their 100,000 million dollars. It will start 9am New York time.

Samsung Ice Cream Sandwich update now out!

Samsung has finally released the Ice Cream sandwich update for these devices:

  • Galaxy R
  • Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus
  • Galaxy Tab 7.7
  • Galaxy Tab 8.9
  • Galaxy Tab 8.9 LTE
  • Galaxy Tab 1.10
The update is currently only released in Korea, Sweden, Poland and Hungary but more countries are getting it as soon as possible. The US will most likely have to wait a bit longer because of their carriers wanting to do their own tests and modifications to the update.
They have also tweaked a new Gingerbread based ROM for the original Galaxy S to include some ICS features like Face Unlock.

Windows 8 Consumer Preview review

So like I posted earlier, the consumer preview of Windows 8 is now released. The consumer preview is basically just a fancier word for beta. When Microsoft was making the developer preview they had to rush it out a bit and left out a lot of features which has now made it to the consumer preview.
A lot of people were very displeased with the developer preview but that release was just made so that developers could start developing metro apps. So now that the more polished and feature rich version is released I though I'd give you guys a review and give my thoughts on it.

Intel Ivy Bridge delayed until June

Ivy Bridge were suppose to launch sometime in March/April according to some roadmaps from Intel. However, the transition to the new 22nm tri-gates transistors hasn't gone according to plans and a spokesperson from Intel said "I think maybe it’s June now" when asked about the Ivy Bridge release date.
Full article can be found on Financial Times' website.
Speaking of Intel, they announced that they will have mobile Atom chips built upon 13nm transistors by 2014, and 8nm in 2015 (which might require them to change from silicon to some other material) Hopefully these deadlines will be met.

MWC part 3

Aluminium and laptops

Okay... Most people will agree that the Macbook Pro, as well as the Macbook Air feel very solidly built and that aluminium for electronic devices makes them feel very high quality, but is it really that good?
I've talked about this quite a lot on /g/ so I thought I should write a blog post on it, so that I don't have to repeat myself so much.

So aluminium, a very nice metal used in a wide variety of things from soda cans to aircrafts, and lots of laptops these days. It's very light and quite durable but there are a few things I dislike about it.

Pornsite password

Most of you probably already know this, but if you're using a certain pornsite (which I won't name on here) then make sure you don't have the same password on the account and your email. I know lots of people have the same password for everything and that's a very bad idea. Especially when some websites store passwords, emails and usernames in plain text, which can be accessed through a standard webbrowsing.

Microsoft mocks Google in video on Youtube

Oh boy this video is great. I love lots of Google products (I am using Blogger right now) but this video really hit the right spots.
The first part of the video and the songs are kind of bad, but the interview is pure gold.

I should probably point out that this isn't the first time Microsoft makes fun of Google.

Why Gizmodo is a shitty site

It's been quite a long time since I sat down and read an article on Gizmodo so I decided to do that today, and I instantly remembered why I quit reading their crap they like to call "articles".

With a title like that (and being on one of worst technology related blogs on the Internet, Gizmodo) you know you're in for a pile of ignorance and Apple !@#" sucking.

My thoughts on OS X Mountain Lion

So Apple recently (and very silently) announced Mountain Lion on their website. It is currently only available for developers but will be released around summer for consumers.
So what is Apple adding this time? Well Apple describes it as "bringing some of the fundamental elements of the iPad experience to the Mac" and so far they have revealed 10 new things. They might add more before the final release but I doubt that they will add anything major. So what are those 10 features?

First post

So I've made a blog... Not really sure what I am going to write on here but James (lolicon) told me that I can't continue using MSN as my personal blog because he is getting sick of listening to my crap.
I will most likely just write whatever I feel like at the moment on here and don't expect anyone to actually read it.
